I love my Kindle, but I won't be doing that to the screen anytime soon.

Twilight, Sparkle Vampires and The Wrath of the Fans

Someone thoroughly confused me about a year ago.  This is not in any way a remarkable event, as I am confused on an (almost) daily basis.  This particular event was confusing because it involved two people who were very excited to have found another person who seemed to share their love for a particular series of books.  I mentioned that I was reading a book called "Twilight (something mumbled)", and my friend waxed slightly rhapsodic that A Dude would be into those books.

"Of course!" I assured her.  Who wouldn't love a book about vampires and other creatures getting into scrapes and adventures?  "Exactly!" she exclaimed.  I further enthused that the lavish and detailed descriptions of Moscow were particularly interesting, as contemporary Russian literature rarely gets translated for the english market.  To which my friend said "What?"

And then I said "Huh?".  And then we realized that she was talking about the Twilight series, which is about attractive vampires convincing women to be in shitty relationships with them, and I was talking about Twilight Watch, which is part of a series that is about ugly vampires killing people in a number of interesting and creative ways. In Moscow.

So.  Not actually much common ground in that respect after all.  I think we talked about organic produce after that, which is a subject on which I am on slightly firmer ground.

I bring this up because I have been slightly overwhelmed by Twilight: New Moon.  Not in that I've seen it OR read the books, but because it seems to be everywhere on my usual internet haunts at the moment.  There's an excellent review over on Wired (excellently WRITTEN, I mean - I'm pretty sure he loathes the movie), and while the review is quite good, the comments are absolute GOLD.  I've also been amused by people's explanations of the various trending Twilight Twitter topics.  Example:

"New Moon is the sequel to the movie 'Twilight'. It is a prime example of the breakdown of modern society as marketing schemes have inevitably sold 'acceptable' sex to teenage girls. The movies themselves are unbelievably poor and lack any greater, profound meaning.

... But Jacob is soooo hot!"

Which seems to sum everything up nicely, don't you think?
