Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

Ok kids, I'll keep this brief, because it's 3:30am, I haven't slept yet, and I'm not likely to. Here's the skinny. I went up to Santa Cruz this weekend, and a curious thing happened. The further I got from Southern California, the better I felt. My shoulders started to unclench, my heart rate slowed down, I started to smile for no particular reason. Then I hit the trees and general gorgeousness of the Santa Cruz area and the smile became a grin, and I started feeling really happy and weirdly content. I've never really felt that way before.

The good vibes continued as the fantastic Rekabek showed me around the place. We took the Hobo Tour, I learned about beets, and several adventures were had.

I also went to San Francisco to see Birdmonster play on New Year's Eve, but due to a shortage of cabs, I was unable to attend, and spent the evening reading this in my room at the hippie hotel.

So the point of all this? I think I'm gonna pack up and move up there sometime within the next six months. My job and my location are not making me happy right now, so it's time to do the hobo thing and move on to someplace new.

Oh, and here are some photos for you:

Way to kick off the New Year, Hobo! Sounds like you had some mighty effective time for introspection on that drive. Nor Cal is great and will welcome you with open arms! Come onnnn up :-)

Carson McCullers? One of my absolute favorites. Give The Heart is a Lonely Hunter a try sometime, too. (Seriously. We almost named Harper after Carson McCullers, but we were a little worried people would think we were way too into Carson Daly.)

I'm glad your weekend was a perfect one! Pack those bags and give that notice!

Do it! With any luck, I'll graduate within the next 10 years and we can move out there too!

carroll: yeah, driving is AWESOME for introspection. that's why i like it so much. :) and don't worry - i'll be back lots!

angela: The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is up next (done with Hodgman) - that rekabek has good taste. i really liked the sad cafe, but i have to admit that Wunderkind is making me really claustrophobic. which is a neat trick to pull off with a book.

slyce: just one more reason to make the move! i miss you guys. and i'd make an awesome babysitter. you don't even know. babies are immune to fire and jellyfish, right? or is that armadillos?

I'm envious of your photo of seaweed. That was the moment when the Ixy's battery died. Thank God someone got a shot of those tubers and zots.

Everybody move to Santa Cruz! Super yay!

I have always been a fan of going with what makes you happy. Congrats on finding happiness in one of the most beautiful places in this country. As someone who fled So Cal, I must say it was one of the best things done in my life and I hope it will be for you too.

rekabek: Mega Huzzah! it was a big tubey pile and i'm glad someone got it, too.

jess: yeah, i've spent most of my life doing what i thought was expected. so far, i've failed to find the joy in that. it's when things get uncertain and maybe a little messy and scary and then, wow, suddenly you've got a stake in something. i'm finding that's where it begins to get interesting...

note to anyone who cares: i still have not slept. it has now been...er...36 hours. woke up in the santa cruz quality inn, had breakfast at starbucks (hey, i have a gift card), and drove down the 101, listening to music and letting the wheels turn below and above.

also, i am in the midst of discovering tom waits RIGHT FUCKING NOW. bone machine. yeah, i dunno what took me so long, either.

all told, it's been a good day so far.
